Auburn Ski Association

Mission: The Auburn Ski Association (ASA) has supported youth skiing and racing in the Auburn area for over 50 years. The ASA fundraises throughout the year but the primary source of funds comes from an annual ski swap held in November of each year. The ASA provides direct funds to the following programs: Edward Little High School Alpine and Nordic teams, Auburn Middle School Alpine and Nordic Teams, Maine Adaptive skiing program run at Lost Valley. The ASA also provides a scholarships to graduating seniors from Edward Little High school.
In 2010, the ASA, in partnership with Lost Valley School Area, began an Wednesday afternoon learn to ski program for school age children 7 through sixth grade. The program’s intent is to provide help to families that may not otherwise be able to afford ski lessons. The family pays about 1/3 of the cost of the program and ASA supplemented the reaming cost.

In June of 2012, Merrick Chadbourne, a member of the Auburn Middle School alpine and Nordic teams passed. Merrick’s parents (Melinda Chadbourne and Miles Smith), who were/are on the board of the ASA, request that in leu of flowers, to please make a donation to the ASA. The donations received became the seed money for the Merrick Chadbourne Memorial Fund, which is still managed by the ASA today. Melinda and Miles asked that the money be used to fund the ski program. Melinda and Miles continued (and still do today) to fundraise for the Merrick Chadbourne Memorial Fund. In 2013, the learn to ski and ride program was changed to the Merrick Chadbourne Learn to ski and Ride Program. To date at least 1000 kids have gone through the program. In addition to the specific program, the memorial fund also provides scholarships ski and ride lessons when kids cannot attend the specific program.

We have recently partnered with the Auburn YMCA to help with logistics such as registering kids in to the program and with transportation.
Small dollar fundraising gets harder every year. A substantial donation from Winterkids would help tremendously.

The picture uploaded is a picture of Merrick from March 4, 2012. It was his 14th birthday. He placed second in an alpine race at Lost Valley.
