Reflections
We have a learning coach every Friday, and during this time, learners made different versions of heart crafts!
In our opening ceremony, we had an outdoor dance party, and then staff had a relay race involving putting on all of their winter gear in teams. In this, we had our Dean of Learners participate, along with our Special Ed director, and both of our custodians. The MC was the outdoor learning coach, and the yeti suit was worn by our secretary!
Our superintendent visited and skated on the ice with learners. Our principal recognized one WinterKid Leader in each learning community for outstanding sportsmanship and participation, and they were recognized with a hot chocolate and sledding break.
For our guest speakers, we had Crown CARES come and visit… and talk to us (classes and a whole school assembly) about kindness and taking care of other’s hearts! The CARES stands for: Creating A Respectful Environment in Society. Their goal is to provide awareness and tools for bullying prevention, inclusion, and social awareness. They came with read aloud books, demonstrations, and activities to teach kindness! We really enjoyed our two-day visit learning how to take care of our own and others hearts.

Reflections
Our outdoor community family day was at Wesserunsett Lake in Madison on Friday Morning. Even with freezing temps, we had over 100 learners, staff, and family members show up for a morning of ice fishing. WABI came and captured the event for local news. We had lots of different groups from our school participate! Executive Director Mr. Works cheffed up sausages and burgers, and our secretary, custodian, and Special Ed director joined to help facilitate the event. Learners that did not wish to attend the event stayed back on campus for indoor winter events. Here, our Tech Specialist hosted flashlight reading inside our pop up planetarium, where learners could try out their new flashlights!

Reflections
We had lots of bonus hands on deck to wrap up our final week of winterkids! A parent volunteered to hand out popcorn during the winter carnival. We had guests from Somerset Woods Trustees, Skowhegan Outdoors, and Move More Kids/Somerset Public Health. All three booths had “swag” to hand out to learners, and shared lots of useful resources about local opportunities to get out, be active, and stay healthy! There were activities to do and trivia at the booths. Outside, we had a winter dance party, a sledding hill, a fire pit for roasting marshmallows, and a sculpture building area. Learners decided they actually wanted to practice throwing snowballs into the woods, so we pivoted and had lots of fun making different snow shapes to then catapult across the lawn!
The fire pit was hosted by our Literacy Interventionist and Tech Coordinator. Inside, hot chocolate was distributed by our Secretary, Ms. Lindsey, our Director of School Operations, Mrs. Savage, and our Executive Director, Mr. Works. We had so much help to make Winter Carnival successful, and it was a huge hit!

The WinterKids Winter Games is a four-week outdoor learning challenge that inspires thousands of Maine elementary students to move, learn, and explore during the HEART of winter.
