We had fantastic Week 1 of the WinterKids Winter Games! Our students jumped into every activity with excitement, curiosity, and a true Woodland Woodchuck spirit
This week’s focus on heart health gave students a meaningful way to connect movement, wellness, and learning. Each student received their own stopwatch and learned how to take their pulse, an engaging hands-on skill that helped them understand how their hearts respond to different types of activity. They tracked their heart rates while stretching, during movement breaks, and even during a calm listening activity with classical music. It was wonderful to see students making real-life connections about how exercise, rest, and mindfulness affect their bodies
Even though the weather didn’t cooperate for our Opening Ceremony, the rain couldn’t dampen our fun. We moved the celebration indoors for a look back at past WinterKids Winter Games videos. Then the whole school stretched together and played a school-wide game of Rock, Paper, Scissors that filled the gym with laughter and energy
Throughout the week, we embraced the outdoors whenever possible—from stretching outside to moving and grooving in the fresh Northern Maine air. One of the students’ favorite moments was searching for heart-shaped treasures outdoors—a perfect way to tie our heart-health theme into outdoor exploration
Overall, it was a wonderful week of learning, movement, and community. Our students shined, our staff jumped in with enthusiasm, and we were reminded how valuable it is to celebrate wellness together.

Our Woodland Woodchucks had an amazing week 2 of the WinterKids Winter Games as we focused on nutrition and healthy habits! Each student received a heart shaped pedometer from Backyard Farms, and they spent the week tracking their steps. We were so proud to see many students reach over 10,000 steps, about the number it takes to climb Mount Katahdin, Maine’s tallest mountain!
One of the highlights of the week was our Community Lunch Day. Students, staff, and famillies enjoyed a delicious and nutritious spaghetti meal prepared by Mrs Thomas and Ms Angela. Their teamwork made this week extra special, and we are grateful for them!
Our school is having a wonderful time staying active, learning about heart-healthy choices, and celebrating healthy living together.

This week we had an Outdoor Family Sliding Party scheduled, but because of the below zero temperatures, we had to move our fun inside! On Thursday night for our family engagement we showcased our students musical talents with a Wild West Musical. Students also enjoyed trying Morse Code with their flashlights! On to Week 4!
Week 4

This was a really fun and busy week for us at Woodland School with the WinterKids Winter Games. We had a special guest come in to talk with the students about dog sledding, and the kids were so interested in everything she shared. It was a great way for them to learn about something many of them had never seen before.
We finished the week with our Winter Carnival and closing ceremony outside. The weather was beautiful, which made the whole day even better. The students had a great time sliding, racing on cross-country skis, and even doing the three-legged races. There was a lot of laughing and cheering, and it was just a very joyful day for everyone.
We also invited our community to join us, and we were happy to see such a good turnout. It really felt like a true Woodland School day—students, families, staff, and community members all coming together.
Thank you, WinterKids, for giving us the motivation to get outside and stay active during these winter months. Our students had a wonderful week!

The WinterKids Winter Games is a four-week outdoor learning challenge that inspires thousands of Maine elementary students to move, learn, and explore during the HEART of winter.
