WinterKids Downhill 24 · 2026 Wrap-Up

24 Hours. One Mountain. A Community That Wouldn’t Stop.

More Than a Race. A Community on a Mission.

For one full night and day on Sugarloaf Mountain, hundreds of skiers, snowboarders, and skinners came together for the 2026 WinterKids Downhill 24, Maine’s most-loved charity ski event. They didn’t just ski. They fundraised, they competed, and they helped give Maine kids access to the magic of winter.

Congratulations to every participant, partner, donor, and volunteer who made this happen.

How Scoring Works at D24

60% — Fundraising
40% — Laps on the Mountain

Scores are based on combined points: fundraising (60%) + time on the mountain (40%). This unique formula is what makes D24 so special: being the fastest skier isn’t enough. You have to rally your community too.

The Hidden Heroes: Skin Up Results

While lifts carried most skiers to the top, a dedicated group of athletes earned triple-point laps by skinning up the mountain on foot, navigating freezing temps and pure exhaustion. These are their remarkable results.

Lester Li’s 26 skin-up laps earned triple points per lap, a key factor in the Sappi Shredders’ King of the Mountain Cup victory.

How D24’s Top Fundraisers Win Before They Even Hit the Snow

Want to crush your fundraising goals next year? Here’s the playbook top earners swear by, including Joe Lajoie (our 2nd highest adult fundraiser) and his 9-year-old son Mason, who raised $4,740.

CAMA6703 Downhill 24 2026 SDP Photo
Step 01
Create a Standardized Ask
Don’t reinvent the wheel for every contact. Write prebuilt scripts for emails (business contacts) and text messages (personal relationships). Match the medium to the relationship.
Step 02
The Two-Week Follow-Up
Send your first follow-up exactly 14 days after the initial ask. People don’t say no, or they will likely forget. The fortune, as Joe says, is in the follow-through.
Step 03
The Five-Day Final Push
Reach out to your network again 5 days before the event. Create urgency. Last-minute giving is real. Capitalize on it.
Step 04
Reference Last Year’s Gift
Tell returning donors exactly what they gave last year and ask if they’d consider increasing it. Anchoring expectations removes friction and increases average gifts.

Every Run Helps Another Maine Kid Step Into Skis for the First Time

This isn’t just Maine’s most unique winter charity event. It’s proof that when a community shows up with grit and heart, the difference it makes is real and lasting.

From a 6-year-old navigating her first laps on a dark mountain to teams raising $60,000 in a single weekend, the 2026 WinterKids Downhill 24 set a new benchmark for what’s possible when physical passion meets purposeful fundraising.

See you on the mountain in 2027.
